Quality and sound

Check the quality of what you bought or downloaded

You downloaded a pack or bought some music and want to know if it's what it claims to be. For example, a FLAC that really comes from an MP3.

This recipe changes nothing. Surco only looks and tells you what it found.

Settings, just once

Open Surco's Settings (⌘ , on Mac) and find each option by its name.

  • SettingsEditorAudio quality analysisOn

On by default. It's what looks at each track's spectrum.

  • SettingsEditorAnalyze everything on importOn

On by default. It analyzes each track as soon as it comes in, without you clicking anything.

Then, each time

  1. 1

    Drag the folder into Surco

Tracks in its subfolders come in too.

  2. 2

Wait for the analysis to finish

At the top you'll see “Analyzing quality…” with a counter.

  3. 3

    Filter by “Doubtful”

In the list filter. These are the tracks where Surco found something.

  4. 4

    Open one to see why

The editor shows the spectrum and explains the verdict with measured numbers.

  • Only “Lossy source” and “Bad quality” show in red.
  • “Possibly reprocessed” shows in amber because it's a suspicion, not proof.
  • An MP3 is never rated bad quality. Cutting the highs is part of the format.
  • Until you click “Convert”, Surco writes nothing to your files.
