Quality and sound

Digitize your vinyl

You recorded your records on the computer and want them ready to play. No needle clicks, no background hiss, no silence at the start and end, and with their Discogs details.

Surco doesn't cut a whole side into tracks. You need one file per track.

Settings, just once

Open Surco's Settings (⌘ , on Mac) and find each option by its name.

  • SettingsProcessingVinyl repairClicksStandard

Removes short needle clicks when converting.

  • SettingsProcessingVinyl repairBackground noiseMediumOptional

Lowers the record hiss you hear in the breakdowns and the platter rumble. Leaves the music alone.

  • SettingsSearchShow only these formatsVinyl

So Discogs shows you the vinyl pressing and not the CD.

  • SettingsProcessingLoudness normalization−1 dBFSOptional

Raises each track until its loudest peak sits at −1 dBFS. It doesn't compress anything.

Then, each time

  1. 1

    Drag your recordings into Surco

    One file per track.

  2. 2

Tag the whole record at once

Select all its tracks and search for the record with /. Surco matches each file to its song, with its A1, B2 position.

  3. 3

    Trim the silence

Open the palette with ⌘K and choose “Trim detected silence on the selection”.

  4. 4

    Click “Convert”

Vinyl repair and loudness are applied when converting.

  • Before converting you can listen to the repair and compare it with the original in the editor's vinyl section.
  • If a track has lots of big clicks, try “Strong”. It can soften the hits a little.
  • If you hear hiss in the breakdowns, turn up “Background noise”. It works even if the track is already trimmed.
  • A click buried under a lot of music at once sometimes gets through.
